Data centers in Argentina: 1 project mapped

No large data center is being built in Argentina yet. The biggest plan, "Stargate Argentina," is a letter of intent between OpenAI and the Argentine company Sur Energy for a data center of up to 500 megawatts of power and up to $25 billion, announced by President Javier Milei's office on October 10, 2025. Sur Energy said it was weighing sites in Neuquén, Río Negro and Chubut, and no site has been named.

Almost seven months after the announcement, Argentina's Economy Ministry acknowledged to Perfil that there was nothing to back up the statement of intent. "Stargate has not been presented," said Darío Clemente of the RIGI Observatory at the environmental group FARN, which tracks projects under Milei's large-investment tax scheme. None of the 17 approved projects or 23 under evaluation is Stargate. Sur Energy co-founder Emiliano Kargieman had said building would start in 2026, and that about 100 people would work there once it ran.

Neuquén is the likeliest host. In November 2025 the provincial government proposed a special zone to attract data centers, running from Añelo and Tratayén in the Vaca Muerta shale field to Arroyito on the Limay river. Argentina has no commercial, tax or environmental rules written for data centers, Chequeado reported. In Añelo, Diego Rosales, spokesman for the Mapuche community Fvta Trayén, said his community already has to ask the oil industry for water, and Alan Rocha of the Observatorio Petrolero Sur warned that the province's rivers are running historically low.
