Thuringia's one large data center proposal, at Eisenach, has been stopped for now by the city council. The Leipzig land developer FAB planned a technology park called "Blue Future" on about 86 hectares of farmland between the villages of Stockhausen and Hötzelsroda. It intended to service the site and sell it on to an investor, with an investment of about one billion euros. The draw was a nearby substation already due for expansion, which the city said would make up to 300 megavolt-amperes of connection capacity available. The buildings would have been up to 22 metres high. FAB also promised a foundation for local social projects, with three million euros of start-up capital, if the site sold.
Mayor Christoph Ihling backed the project as a new growth industry for a city losing car-industry jobs, and argued that Europe needs its own cloud capacity and more independence from foreign providers. Residents at two public meetings, in Stockhausen and Neukirchen, objected mainly to water use for cooling and to noise. The local Green party and an energy-transition group added that FAB could not say who would build, run or use the site, and pointed to heat output from at least 300 MW with no plan for using it. They also objected to technical structures up to 35 metres tall and to the substation and 380 kV line upgrades the project would need. They argued that such campuses create few jobs and little local tax relative to the land they take. A residents' petition with 432 valid signatures opposed the development plan. On July 1, 2026, the city council backed the petition by 19 votes to 16, and Ihling withdrew his proposal to draw up the development plan. Datacenter-Insider noted that this halts the project but is not a final rejection.
