Hyogo's one tracked data center is AirTrunk's OSK1 in Amagasaki, on the western edge of Osaka. The 20-megawatt building, with about 16,500 square meters of floor space, 5,400 of them for computer halls, and an on-site substation, was started in February 2024 with completion scheduled for February 2026; no opening has been announced. AirTrunk says it will serve large technology companies as a new cloud hub for the Kansai region, alongside its sites east and west of Tokyo.
Executives of Kansai Electric Power, the builder Nishimatsu Construction and the designer Nikken Sekkei attended the groundbreaking. Any new data center in Hyogo will face the same wait for power as elsewhere in Japan: connecting one to the grid can take up to about ten years, Nikkei reported, as eight big power companies add substations at 30 locations nationwide.
