Agder has two of Norway's biggest data center plans. Bulk Infrastructure's N01 campus at Støleheia in Vennesla, just outside Kristiansand, sits on a 300-hectare site beside one of Europe's largest transformer stations; Bulk says it has secured 400 megawatts of power there, with room for up to a gigawatt, and the AI cloud company CoreWeave runs a large Nvidia cluster on the site. At Tonstad in Sirdal, the British company GreenScale plans a data center that neighbors have appealed, and the county governor will make the final ruling.
The grid is being rebuilt for N01. On January 6, 2026, the energy regulator NVE allowed Statnett and Glitre Nett to build a new Stemmen transformer station at Støleheia and gave Bulk's subsidiary N01 Utilities permission for two short 420-kilovolt lines, saying the need is largely tied to the planned data center. NVE required the work to spare meadow and swamp forest.
GreenScale's Tonstad project would cost about NOK 30 billion and use more electricity than the whole city of Stavanger, NRK reported. Cabin owners and neighbors fear damage to nature, and the county governor found "major deficiencies" (translated from Norwegian) in the council's decision; in 2026 the Sirdal council rejected all the complaints and sent the case back to the governor. Deputy mayor Isak Liland, who helped found the original site company, and his children have so far made NOK 1.2 million from its sale to GreenScale; he says he declared himself disqualified.
