Barcelona's newest large data center is MERLIN Edged's building in the Zona Franca logistics park, which opened on May 13, 2025 with CoreWeave, a U.S. AI cloud company, as its tenant. The first phase uses 15 megawatts of power and holds 10,224 Nvidia H200 chips; CoreWeave planned a second phase with newer Nvidia Blackwell chips in 2026. Mayor Jaume Collboni opened it and called it "un projecte estratègic" (a strategic project) for the Zona Franca.
The operators say the building uses no water for cooling and runs on renewable power; the local broadcaster betevé reported it created 60 jobs. It connects to the Barcelona Cable Landing Station, where undersea internet cables come ashore.
Not everyone in the city shares the mayor's enthusiasm. On September 22, 2026, the campaign "No als megacentres de dades a Catalunya" protested outside the opening of the AI Summit Barcelona, presenting a manifesto it says more than 140 groups have signed. It wants a moratorium on data centers above 5 megawatts across Catalonia until there are rules for transparency and public oversight.
