The Swedish company EcoDataCenter is building its biggest campus yet at the former Kvarnsveden paper mill in Borlänge, where it broke ground in September 2025; the first phase, due in 2027, is set at 250 megawatts of power, with room for more than 360. In late August 2026 it signed to buy 52 hectares from Smedjebacken municipality for a third Dalarna campus of up to 150 megawatts; building and environmental permits are expected in early 2027, and construction can start once they are final.
EcoDataCenter opened its first data center in Falun in 2019, and that campus could reach 80 megawatts. Its customers include the U.S. AI cloud company CoreWeave, which said in 2024 it would put Nvidia chips in Falun rather than build its own Swedish site, along with Mistral AI and DeepL. At Kvarnsveden, site manager Johan Appelberg told Lokalt i Dalarna the build would employ 400 to 500 people; Borlänge's council sold the company a third of the old mill for 400 million kronor.
The local argument is about electricity. EcoDataCenter's consultation notice for Kvarnsveden gave a maximum supplied power of 760 megawatts, with backup diesel generators, and a 2024 letter in Borlänge Tidning said that is more than one of the shut reactors at Oskarshamn or Barsebäck produced. A debate article in the same paper this year said Kvarnsveden may suit a data center but urged the city-owned Borlänge Energi to publish how the connection will affect grid fees and district heating.
