The biggest data center announced inside Berlin is Virtus's BERLIN1 campus in Marienpark: four buildings for cloud, government and business customers, which the British operator said would open in 2026. Its waste heat is to go into a heating network run by Marienpark's developers, Investa and the gas utility GASAG. NTT also runs a data center in the city.
Power is what limits new ones. About three years ago data center operators started asking the city's grid company, Stromnetz Berlin, for connections of around 100 megawatts each, more than the peak demand of the whole city of Potsdam. The company paused large requests and now shares out the little spare capacity once a year, while holding power back so households can still connect car chargers and heat pumps. "Had we not changed the process and adopted a moratorium last year, our capacity for large connection requests would now be exhausted," said Kerstin Niemeier of Stromnetz Berlin.
Only about 350 megawatts remain for large users, in parts of the south of the city and at one point in the north. Stromnetz Berlin plans to invest almost €3 billion by 2029 and to double its grid capacity to about 4.5 gigawatts within ten years. The Berlin Senate says it wants smaller data centers built into the city that can feed existing heat networks.
