Hamburg's data centers are small sites serving the city's internet and phone networks, and the biggest one being built is IPHH4. Portus Data Centers is building it on the Internet Port Hamburg campus on Wendenstrasse in the east of the city: two buildings of 6.4 megawatts of computer power each, with the first phase due to be finished in the last quarter of 2026, according to Data Center Dynamics. Equinix also runs a data center in the city.
The city has little power left to offer. In May 2026 the city government confirmed that Hamburg's medium- and high-voltage grid has no free connection reserves. Between 2020 and 2025 it received 110 requests for connections totaling about 4,800 megawatts, and it could not say which could be connected soon. From the second half of 2026, the city's grid company will share out spare capacity for new large connections among applicants instead of serving them first come, first served, so data centers may get waits or less power than they asked for.
Just outside the city, in Rellingen, the Hamburg cloud company X-Ion is spending nearly €80 million on DataR, a data center of up to 5 megawatts that was due to open in summer 2026. Its waste heat is to warm the neighboring Erich-Kästner-Schule and its sports hall through a local heating pilot.
