Equinix data centers: 78 sites mapped

Equinix is one of the oldest names in the rental data center business; most of its sites are not the giant AI campuses at the center of local fights. It rents space, power and cooling to more than 10,500 customers from 281 colocation facilities in 77 metro areas, built on smaller buildings near city centers that serve as network interchange points.

For large AI tenants it runs a separate line called xScale. In October 2024 it set up a joint venture with Singapore's GIC and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board to raise more than $15 billion for several US campuses of 100 megawatts or more, adding over 1.5 gigawatts.

The xScale push is bringing Equinix into farm country. In Minooka, Illinois, village trustees held a September public hearing on an Equinix campus at Holt and Ridge roads, planned as four AI data centers followed by three or four retail colocation buildings, which Village Administrator Dan Duffy called "about a two billion dollar investment."

Duffy said the campus would bring $6 million to $7 million a year in property tax. Residents were mainly worried about water; Duffy said Equinix had chosen a dry cooling system that uses more electricity instead. Equinix must also repay road improvements and help fund a bike path of more than $1 million.

Its toughest fight is in Cape Town, South Africa, where the Municipal Planning Tribunal approved a 174 MVA hyperscale development in the King Air Industria precinct, next to the Barcelona informal settlement and the townships of Bishop Lavis, Gugulethu and KTC. On August 6, 2026, the Housing Assembly and the UK group Foxglove appealed, arguing the tribunal had little or no information on water, emissions, diesel generators, air pollution or noise, and never assessed the combined effect of the two planned data centers.

"Our members know what it is to queue for water, to go without electricity and to wait decades for decent housing," said Kashiefa Achmat of the Housing Assembly. Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews said the approval is suspended until the executive mayor, as appeal authority, decides.
