Data centers in Hudson County, New Jersey: 3 projects mapped

Hudson County's two largest cities have banned new standalone data centers. The Jersey City Council voted 9-0 on August 19, 2026 to remove data centers from the uses allowed on the city's industrial land, and Bayonne's council passed a 5-0 ban that Mayor Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski signed on August 13. Existing data centers stay, including about five inside downtown Jersey City office buildings, Equinix's campus in Secaucus and CoreWeave's LGA1 in Weehawken, at the mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel.

"Data centers eat up power, drive up utility bills for every ratepayer in this state, and employ almost nobody," Jersey City Mayor James Solomon said. Critics came from both sides. The ban still allows data centers inside office or campus buildings, which Councilwoman Eleana Little said "are not the large AI data centers that people around the country are protesting right now." Resident Brenden Clark asked the council to table it, arguing a new state law already keeps ordinary customers from paying for large data centers' power.

Bayonne has no data centers, but in the past year three were proposed, including a large AI data center at the Delta Self-Storage site on New Hook Road. Residents packed council meetings for months, and the ban became the defining issue of the May mayoral election, which Ashe-Nadrowski's slate swept after she promised to outlaw them. "We showed that the people can fight back and that we're the ones who have power, not the developers," said resident Jennah Reddick, who led the fight.
