Middlesex County's biggest data center fight ended in under two weeks. In February 2026, New Brunswick residents learned the city's redevelopment plan for 100 Jersey Avenue, a 22-acre former industrial site near Rutgers and a middle school, had been written to allow a data center alongside about 600 apartments. Hundreds packed City Hall on February 18, and the City Council removed data centers from the plan and restored a public park, passing the change unanimously. "Many people did not want this in their neighborhood," said Bruce Morgan, president of the New Brunswick NAACP.

Sayreville has since adopted its own pause. The Borough Council advanced an 18-month moratorium, Ordinance 15-26, on June 15; a push to make it permanent failed 3-3, with Mayor Kennedy O'Brien breaking the tie against it over the risk of lawsuits. After a July 20 hearing, the moratorium took effect and runs through January 2028. Residents raised noise, water use and tax-break doubts; the Carpenters Union spoke for the construction jobs. No project is pending, though the mayor has pointed to the 400-acre former Hercules site as a likely target.

Old Bridge is still weighing its own ban. Councilman David Merwin's proposed three-year moratorium drew a heated response at a June 9 meeting, so the council instead asked for an ordinance barring data centers in every zoning district. "It turned into a big hullabaloo," Merwin told News 12. Mayor Debbie Walker noted data centers already aren't a permitted use townshipwide, though two redevelopment plans allow them, and a redeveloper called the site's power supply insufficient.

One Middlesex project has already been approved: the South Brunswick Planning Board cleared a 341,000-square-foot data center at the old Princeton Nurseries site in 2025, and residents have since petitioned to reject or suspend it. Mayor Charles Carley says the approval requires sound walls and daytime-only generator testing, and that PSE&G must confirm it can deliver the power requested. Old Bridge's council has not yet scheduled a final vote on its prohibition ordinance.
