Data centers in Mexico: 10 projects mapped

Mexico's data center industry is centered on Querétaro, which had 12 facilities operating by February 2026 with up to 10 more planned. More than $12 billion has been invested there since 2020, including about $1.3 billion from Microsoft and $5 billion over 15 years announced by Amazon in 2024. In September 2025, President Claudia Sheinbaum's government announced CloudHQ's $4.8 billion plan for six data centers and 900 megawatts of power; CloudHQ is spending about $250 million on its own power infrastructure.

By August 2026, Sheinbaum's tone had shifted. "We do need to have data centers to advance in artificial intelligence, but Mexico does not necessarily have to be the data center of other places in the world," she said on August 18, pointing to how much electricity and water they use. Seven of Querétaro's 11 aquifers are reported as overexploited, and one data center employed only 64 people in 2025.

The campuses are concentrated in Colón, El Marqués and Pedro Escobedo. Residents of Viborillas report water rationing to three days a week, and Chichimeca and Otomí communities have marched over water use. "A standard data center consumes approximately the same electricity as a medium-sized city," said Abelardo Rodríguez Macías of the Chichimeca Otomí Assembly. Querétaro's government disputes the link between data centers and water shortages, since the state exempts projects in industrial parks from environmental impact filings.
