Amazon Web Services' plan for a data center on 600 acres in Madison and St. Clair townships, Butler County, Ohio, is on hold until after the Nov. 3 election. The City of Trenton withdrew its annexation petition in September 2026, a day before a county commission hearing, after both townships denied the request and Amazon offered each township $5 million plus property taxes. "To me, what's the factor is you're losing your democracy," said St. Clair Township landowner Joe Krueger, who says he will not sell. Trenton voters decide on Election Day whether to ban data centers above 25 megawatts; if Amazon instead goes through Madison Township, the county commission would decide.
In Tucson, Arizona, the city council voted 7-0 on Aug. 6, 2025 to end talks on Project Blue, a data center campus near the Pima County Fairgrounds, after meetings drew crowds of 800 to 1,000 people over its water use. Beale Infrastructure had been the public face of the project until Amazon's involvement was accidentally released to Arizona Luminaria. The project went ahead without the city: Pima County sold the land to Beale for more than $27 million on Dec. 24, 2025, and construction began in April 2026, when dozens of protesters tried to block trucks at the site.
In Missouri, Amazon and Google are building data centers on a combined 1,900 acres east of New Florence, in Montgomery County. The advocacy group Preserve Montgomery County sued the county and the state in February 2026, arguing officials gave inadequate public notice about the data centers' water and electricity use and a tax abatement. In September 2026 a Cole County judge refused to dismiss most of the suit, ruling the group has standing; the case against Montgomery County can now go forward.
