AWS El Burgo de Ebro data center, Aragon, Spain

Amazon Web Services runs a 15 megawatt data center at the El Espartal industrial estate in El Burgo de Ebro, near Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain, which has been operating since 2021. A second, larger campus is planned on 43 hectares nearby; Aragon's environmental agency approved its environmental permit in May 2026, and the regional government gave final approval in June 2026.

The new campus would have six main buildings plus a substation, backup generators and 8,736 solar panels mounted over its water reservoirs. It would use nearly 115,000 cubic meters of water a year, most of it drawn from the Canal Imperial de Aragon in summer, plus about 80,000 cubic meters of stored rainwater for cooling.

Amazon is paying 3.73 million euros to seal 25 kilometers of open irrigation ditches on the canal, which it says will save water for the region. Two environmental groups, Tu Nube Seca Mi Rio and Ecologistas en Accion, are challenging the regional government's approval of Amazon's wider Aragon expansion, which includes this campus, before the High Court of Justice of Aragon.

The court admitted their appeal in January 2026 and rejected Amazon's argument that it had come too late. The regional Council of Government approved the project as one "of general interest" to Aragon; the latest report on the campus is from June 2026, and the court has not yet ruled.
