Microsoft La Muela data center, Zaragoza, Aragon

Microsoft plans the largest of its three proposed Aragon data center campuses on 146 hectares in Phase 5 of the Centro Via industrial estate in La Muela, near Zaragoza, Spain. The Aragon government declared the La Muela campus a project of regional general interest in December 2023, and gave initial approval in November 2025 to Microsoft's overall plan, called Region MSFT, for campuses in La Muela, Villamayor de Gallego and Zaragoza.

The La Muela site would hold two single and two double data center buildings plus an administration building, at an estimated cost of 2,179 million euros, according to the plan as summarized by Hoy Aragon. The three campuses together would cover 283.79 hectares and cost more than 5.3 billion euros to build, with 1,000 to 2,000 construction workers per site and about 900 permanent jobs once all three are running.

"Following its final approval, we will begin simultaneous construction of the first phase of the project at the three planned locations in La Muela, Villamayor de Gallego, and Zaragoza," a Microsoft spokesperson said after the initial approval. Microsoft planned to begin construction at the end of 2026 and have the first phase running in 2030, with work on the full campuses continuing for another six years, El Espanol reported in March 2026.

The same report said Amazon Web Services and Microsoft were competing for space at the same grid connection point, Penaflor 220, and that power availability would govern how fast Aragon's many data center projects come online. El Espanol reported local opposition to data centers in Aragon over their use of water and energy.

The plan has not yet had final approval: in an order dated July 24, 2026 and published July 30, the Aragon government amended its initial approval to add Microsoft's environmental impact study, approved that study initially, sent it to the regional environment agency INAGA for assessment, and opened a new public comment period on it.
