Microsoft data centers: 64 sites mapped

Microsoft's Fairwater AI data center in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, is facing a class action lawsuit from neighbors over noise. Three residents of neighboring Sturtevant sued in federal court in July 2026, saying the fans on the 1.2 million square foot campus "physically invade" nearby properties; they want to represent everyone within 1.5 miles, more than 1,000 households. One plaintiff says the noise forced him to move to a later work shift because he could not sleep. Microsoft calls the site an "AI superfactory."

Microsoft has also pulled back elsewhere. Analysts reported in early 2025 that it had canceled US data center leases, then that it had walked away from pending leases in the US and Europe totaling 2 gigawatts, largely because it decided not to support more OpenAI training work; other analysts said Microsoft still had about 5 gigawatts of leased capacity due online through 2028. In September 2026, Bloomberg reported that Microsoft still plans to grow its global footprint from about 12 gigawatts to more than 38 gigawatts of power by 2032. Chief executive Satya Nadella has said the constraint is not chips but having finished buildings ready to fill with computers.

For power, Microsoft has a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy for output from the restarted Three Mile Island reactor in Pennsylvania, due back online in 2028.
