Microsoft Quilicura (SCL03) data center, Quilicura, Santiago Metropolitan Region

Microsoft's SCL03 data center in Quilicura, in Santiago's northwest, is a $317 million project on a 6.8-hectare site that Microsoft filed with Chile's environmental evaluation service in January 2022. The plans call for one data center building split into two units, COLO1 and COLO2, plus an administration building and a 26MVA substation, with the first phase estimated to take 17 months, which would put completion around mid-2023.

SCL03 is part of Microsoft's Chilean cloud cluster, which spans three Santiago-area locations. Quilicura is a dense data center hub that also has Google's only operating data center in Latin America. In June 2025 President Gabriel Boric said the cluster would generate more than 81,000 jobs, a figure Microsoft said includes indirect jobs at clients and partners.

Rest of World reported in November 2025 that permit filings for 17 Chilean data center projects, including Microsoft and Google sites, show a combined potential of no more than 1,547 full-time operations jobs. Quilicura councilwoman Alexandra Arancibia told the outlet the specialized jobs "can't be filled locally." Environmental activist Tania Rodríguez of the group Mosacat said "data centers are like warehouses filled with machines and cables, and there's little need for workers."

Santiago residents have also objected to the water and energy the data centers use. Chile's investment agency InvestChile says 32 more data centers are planned by 11 international firms by 2028, and most of Chile's 67 planned and operating data centers are in the Santiago region.
