Data centers in the United Kingdom: 42 projects mapped
Britain's data center fights are mostly in the green belt around London, and ministers have usually sided with the builders. In May 2025 the government overturned Three Rivers District Council's refusal of Greystoke Land's 96-megawatt, £1 billion data center off Bedmond Road near Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire, saying investment could otherwise go to markets outside the UK. Months earlier it had approved a 140-megawatt scheme at the Court Lane Industrial Estate in Buckinghamshire that local officials had rejected.
Opponents have won some. In January 2026 the government conceded a High Court challenge by the campaign group Foxglove and agreed to quash its approval of Greystoke's Woodlands Park data center near Iver, which Buckinghamshire Council had refused. "It shouldn't take us having to drag the government to court," said Foxglove's Rosa Curling.

The biggest project under way is QTS's campus at Cambois in Northumberland, on the former Blyth Power Station site. Northumberland Council approved the first phase in December 2025, and QTS said it would install piling for the first building in spring 2026. OpenAI paused its Stargate UK project at Cobalt Park in North Tyneside in April 2026, citing regulation and energy costs.
Outside England, Edinburgh's council unanimously refused a 210-megawatt data center on the city's outskirts in February 2026, and the Scottish Government has put the developer's appeal on hold until it produces a full environmental assessment. Anglesey refused a data center on the old Octel chemical site at Amlwch in April 2026.
National policy keeps pushing for more. A revised National Planning Policy Framework for England, published August 17, 2026, strengthens support for data centers, and on August 28 the government rejected the Green Party's call for a moratorium on large new ones, saying a pause would push investment and jobs overseas.
