China Mobile data centers: 19 sites mapped

China Mobile, the state-owned Chinese carrier, builds its largest data centers at home. The biggest sits in the Horinger New Area outside Hohhot, Inner Mongolia: Yicai reported in April 2024 that it had gone into operation with 6.7 EFLOPS of computing power and about 20,000 AI accelerator cards, 85 percent of them made in China. A company planning executive told Yicai that China Mobile had 12 such computing hubs running, with more planned in Harbin and Guiyang. Light Reading reported in July 2024 that China Mobile had placed a 19.1 billion yuan ($2.6 billion) order for computing gear with Chinese suppliers, including Huakun Zhenyu, which builds hardware on Huawei's Kunpeng and Ascend processors.

Abroad, the international arm is still growing. In June 2026 the Malaysian developer Tanco signed a non-binding agreement with China Mobile International to consider a 50-megawatt data center in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, DCD reported, with two years to reach a firm deal; DCD noted it was unclear whether Tanco had prior experience building or running a data center.

In the United States, where China Mobile still runs network hubs at data centers despite a 2019 denial of its carrier license, a bipartisan House committee investigation reported in August 2026 that it found at least 143 active China Mobile network assets in American facilities. The Federal Communications Commission voted on April 30, 2026 to advance rules that could bar China Mobile from operating US data centers altogether; China's Ministry of Commerce urged the US to "stop its wrong practices immediately."
