Data centers in Santa Clara County, California: 22 projects mapped

San José is courting large new data centers, and the biggest are planned for Alviso, a small, low-lying neighborhood in the north of the city. Microsoft is building a 99-megawatt campus at 1657 Alviso-Milpitas Road with 224 natural gas generators; Google proposes research buildings drawing about 250 megawatts; and Prologis is negotiating for 159 acres of buffer land by the wastewater plant for data centers and research space using 496 megawatts. City staff plan to bring new data center standards to the City Council in December.

Residents want a moratorium until those standards are in place. "We're putting an entire city's worth of data centers in this tiny neighborhood, and the public health implications are unstudied," said San José resident Ellina Yin. In south San José, Prologis also proposes a 99-megawatt data center with 44 diesel generators on Silver Creek Valley Road. Mayor Matt Mahan promises "some of the highest, strictest standards in every category of concern" but opposes a pause. San José has about 20 data centers running, six under construction and five seeking approval.

Santa Clara, next door, has about 60 data centers, more than any other West Coast city, drawn by cheap power from the city-owned Silicon Valley Power. The limit there is the grid: Digital Realty and STACK have each finished a 48-megawatt building that stands empty until a $450 million utility upgrade is done in 2028. Council member and mayoral candidate Kevin Park wants to stop: "Let's stop building data centers." Gilroy, in the south of the county, has tightened its approvals.
