Most of Chongqing's data centers sit in one district: Shuitu New City, in the Liangjiang New Area, which the city says had 80,000 server racks and about 400,000 servers in 2024, led by China Mobile's Chongqing data center. Tencent's cloud data center there opened its first phase in 2018 with room for 100,000 servers, with a second phase planned to double that. The city is one half of the national Chengdu-Chongqing computing hub, alongside Sichuan.
Summer heat is the local risk. In August 2022 a record heatwave and a drought that cut Sichuan's hydropower led Chongqing to order factories to restrict output from August 17, and the curbs were then extended. Honda, which made 23% of its power equipment in Chongqing, kept its plant closed: "We don't know what to do until we see what the government tells us for next week," a spokesperson said.
The city's data center operators say they are coping. In August 2026 the state outlet iChongqing reported that the China Unicom Southwest Data Center, with five buildings, 7,687 racks and 158 customers, had kept running through "persistent high temperatures" after cutting its power use by about 3.8 million kilowatt-hours a year. Chongqing named two more data center zones in 2022: the Bishan area of the Western Science City, where Sugon built a liquid-cooled computing center, and the Chongqing Economic and Technological Development Zone.
