Culham AI Data Centre, Abingdon, England

The UK Atomic Energy Authority is looking for a private partner to build an AI data center at Culham Campus near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, the country's first AI Growth Zone, a designation meant to speed up approvals and guarantee power. UKAEA plans to release at least 10 acres with spare grid capacity for about 100 megawatts of power at first, and is exploring a larger plot that could allow up to 500 megawatts. It expects up to 20 megawatts of the facility could be made available on demand for fusion and other research at the site.

UKAEA closed its call for investment partners on September 15, 2025, and said it would follow in October 2025 with an invitation to participate setting the final terms for bidders; no partner has been announced since. The site was chosen because decommissioning JET, the fusion reactor that ran there, freed up its 400kV grid connection, which UKAEA's Tim Bestwick said carries enough power for tens of thousands of homes.

South Oxfordshire District Council hired a study on using the data center's waste heat to warm nearby homes; the study ran from March 2 to June 30, 2026, and no findings have been published since. The council's local plan allows 3,500 new homes on land next to the data center site that could also use that heat.

Amazon Web Services and CloudHQ are also developing data centers near Culham.
