Data centers in Wales: 3 projects mapped
Most of Wales's data center building is in the south, and most of it is Vantage Data Centers. Its Newport campus, on the site of a former LG semiconductor plant, has run since 2010 and is planned to reach 148 megawatts of power across three buildings; in August 2026 the AI cloud company Nebius agreed to lease space there. Vantage also has permission from the Vale of Glamorgan Council for a campus of up to 120 megawatts at the Bro Tathan business park in St Athan, and is developing a former Ford plant in Bridgend in phases through 2040.
The plans far outstrip what runs today. A July 2026 Welsh Parliament research briefing put Wales's data center capacity at 154 megawatts in 2024, and listed proposals of 148 and 150 megawatts in Cardiff, 200 in Newport, about 600 in Bridgend and 349 on Anglesey. Welsh planning policy, unlike England's and Scotland's, does not mention data centers at all, so councils are deciding them without specific guidance.
In the north, Anglesey County Council refused Carbon3.ai's plan to turn the former Octel bromine works at Amlwch Port, a 61-acre site empty since 2004, into an AI data center. Its decision notice of April 20, 2026, found "insufficient information has been submitted to demonstrate that the proposal will not harm the landscape, special designated sites, ecology, Welsh Water apparatus as well as the amenity of adjacent nearby residential properties."
