AWS Baruth/Mark data center, Brandenburg, Germany

Amazon Web Services plans a 100-megawatt data center in Baruth/Mark, in the Teltow-Fläming district of Brandenburg, Germany, for its AWS European Sovereign Cloud, the regional news site Niederlausitz aktuell reported in January 2026. It is one of two AWS sites planned in the region, alongside a 200-megawatt data center in Massen near Finsterwalde, part of 7.8 billion euros of planned AWS investment in Brandenburg.

AWS launched the European Sovereign Cloud in Potsdam on January 15, 2026, and the Brandenburg economy ministry said AWS would first use existing colocation data centers before building its own in the state. AWS says the sovereign cloud is kept physically and logically separate from its other regions, run only by EU residents, with all data, including metadata, kept in the EU.

Water is the local worry: in September 2026, as the Baruth town council cleared a development plan for a separate factory project in the area, the environmental group Ressourcen-Bündnis Baruth asked how the region's water supply would hold up in dry years if all the planned large users drew water at once. Brandenburg's economy minister Daniel Keller has said up to 30 billion euros could be invested in data centers in the state in the coming years.

Any AWS project in Baruth would go before the same town council that voted 12 to 2 to approve the nearby factory plan in September 2026.
