AWS Massen-Niederlausitz data center, Brandenburg, Germany

AWS Massen-Niederlausitz is an Amazon Web Services data center under construction at Massen, near Finsterwalde in the Elbe-Elster district of southern Brandenburg, Germany. By May 2026 earthworks were visible across the site, temporary surfaces had been laid for construction and logistics, and a container village had gone up to house the workers. The site is planned for about 200 megawatts of power, one of the largest data center projects in southern Brandenburg.

The Elbe-Elster district building authority issued the construction permit after about four months of review. One step is still outstanding: approval for the substation planned on site to supply the campus had not been fully granted as of the May 2026 report.

Massen is one of two Brandenburg sites carrying the first region of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a service for European public bodies and regulated industries that opened January 15, 2026. AWS says it has committed more than 7.8 billion euros to the program in Germany and expects it to support an average of 2,800 full time jobs a year. Brandenburg's economics minister, Daniel Keller, said the state is on course to become Germany's leading data center location after the Rhine-Main region.

Brandenburg now counts 15 data center projects, and many of its districts show up on independent mapping of groundwater stress, with the regional power network described as nearing its limits given the number of connection requests. Permits for what is still outstanding at Massen, the on-site substation, come from the Elbe-Elster district building authority.
