Data centers in Indonesia: 7 projects mapped

Batam, the island across the strait from Singapore, is where Indonesia's data center boom is landing, with at least 16 new data centers in various stages there, The Jakarta Post reported in August 2026. The biggest is DayOne's campus at Kabil Industrial Tech Park, which has a deal with the utility PLN Batam for 450 megawatts of power, delivered in phases through 2026 and 2027. DayOne already runs a data center at Nongsa Digital Park.

Water is the local fight. Batam's six reservoirs produce 3,487 liters a second, while large data centers need about 18.93 million liters a day, as much as 10,000 to 50,000 residents use. "The situation of water congestion in Batam is currently like a lottery, it's just a matter of waiting for which housing won't receive water today," said Uba Ingan Sigalingging of the group Gerakan Bersama Rakyat. In December 2024, residents of the Teluk Mata Ikan fishing village protested outside Nongsa Digital Park that its water kept flowing while theirs did not.

Suyono Saputra of Batam International University says the city should put "utility first, investment follows," warning that a supply crisis could hit residents hard if infrastructure lags. The long-term fix, turning seawater into drinking water, needs money and time. Most of Indonesia's other data centers listed below, including AWS and NTT, are east of Jakarta around Cikarang, Cibitung and Karawang.
