West Java is where Indonesia's biggest data centers are being built, in the industrial estates east of Jakarta at Bekasi, Cikarang and Karawang, and now at Jatiluhur in Purwakarta. On July 28, 2026, with Governor Dedi Mulyadi present, BDx broke ground on a 640-megawatt AI campus of six buildings about five kilometers from the Jatiluhur Dam; the first 120-megawatt building is due in early 2027. Digital Edge's first building at its campus in the Greenland International Industrial Center in Bekasi, topped out in May, is due by the end of 2026.
The other campuses are just as big on paper. Digital Edge plans 500 megawatts in its first four Bekasi buildings, with room for 1 gigawatt. DCI Indonesia's H2 campus in Karawang, on 791 hectares in an industrial park owned by the Salim Group, has room for up to 600 megawatts. Damac's Edgnex plans a $2.3 billion, 144-megawatt data center on a 50,000-square-meter site in Cikarang, with its first phase due in December 2026. In Bogor, Salim bought out Keppel's share of their data center and relaunched it as IndoData.
Water is the worry. The 2026 dry season left 1,018,922 people across West Java short of clean water as of September 21, the provincial disaster agency said, including 99,525 in Purwakarta and 93,236 in Bekasi Regency. The province's revenue agency says power and water for Jatiluhur were arranged with PLN and the local water utility without cutting into household supply. Writing in Katadata, Yunani Abiyoso argued that Indonesia has no specific rules on data center water use, and that large freshwater permits in dry areas could break a 2019 law putting household needs and small farms first.
