Amazon's two Jerome Township campuses called for fire and emergency services 84 times in four years, and firefighters told the Columbus Dispatch they were often met by security guards and made to wait outside the gates for up to an hour. Two construction workers have died at Amazon's Jerome Township sites, one crushed at the nearby Warner Road campus and one in a fall at Industrial Parkway, and an April 2025 fire at Industrial Parkway occupied firefighters for 30 hours and caused $50 million in damage.

Amazon said it and its contractors have "implemented additional mechanisms to further improve health and safety of their sites," and put the gate delays down to contractors' own background-check rules. On September 3, 2025 Jerome Township's trustees voted unanimously to halt new data center applications for nine months, catching four projects already filed.

"We're finding now that we're experiencing data centers in real time, it is not tolerable for our residents," trustee Wezlynn Davis said. The halt did not cover applications already filed before the vote, and trustees later approved permits for some of those pending projects, the Columbus Dispatch reported. Davis said the pause would let the trustees move data centers from a permitted use to a conditional one, giving the township more oversight of future projects.

Amazon's two campuses in the township carry 10-year tax abatements approved by Union County, so the township collects less commercial tax from them than it otherwise could. Jerome Township's trustees decide the township's zoning and are weighing the shift from permitted to conditional use for future data center projects.
