Amazon Web Services' first Hilliard data center sits at 5109 Hayden Run Road in Franklin County, Ohio, west of Columbus; construction began in 2015 and the campus opened AWS's first Ohio cloud region in 2016. The campus grew to five buildings, and in 2022 Hilliard's economic development director David Meadows said the fifth and final building there was being finished.
Amazon has since built two more Hilliard campuses, one between Cosgray and Leppert roads and one on Scioto Darby Road, and in 2023 said it would spend an estimated $7.8 billion over six years on central Ohio data center operations, after $6.3 billion invested there since 2015. Hilliard offered Amazon a 15-year, 100 percent property tax abatement in 2019, Signal Ohio reported.
The newer fight over power in Hilliard involves a natural-gas fuel cell plant planned for the Scioto Darby Road campus, a separate site with its own zoning and permit history from the Hayden Run buildings.
