Amazon Web Services' $3 billion data center campus is under construction in its early stages in Vicksburg, on what it calls the U.S. 61 South Warren site along U.S. Highway 61, with its main entrance road off Old Cain Ridge Road, AWS said in April 2026. The AWS data center, known locally as Project Steamboat, is the largest private-sector investment in Warren County, Mississippi's history.

Gov. Tate Reeves announced the project in November 2025, promising at least 200 full-time jobs at the campus and about 300 more across the county. The state authorized $44 million in incentives under the Mississippi Major Economic Impact Act, Warren County is also investing, and Entergy Mississippi has promised to supply the power. It is Amazon's second data center campus in Mississippi, after the $10 billion Madison County investment announced in 2024. Reeves said the Vicksburg Warren School District will receive millions of dollars a year through a fee-in-lieu arrangement.

Roger Wehner, AWS's vice president of economic development, told the Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce in April that "The construction mobilization is kicking off," with about $3 million of initial infrastructure and site work to deal with the land's topography. He said 1,000 to 1,250 workers are expected on site at the peak of construction, and permanent jobs will average $70,000 to $80,000 a year. Power will come from the $1.2 billion Vicksburg Advanced Power Station that Entergy is building nearby, and Wehner said AWS pays the full cost of its energy use and related infrastructure.

Residents have raised water, energy and environmental concerns, and Reeves's announcement drew comments worried about utility rates. Wehner said AWS modeling shows the campus would use water for cooling about 9 percent of the year: "So it's probably 30 days out of the year, and I bet everybody in this room can guess what 30 days that is? Probably somewhere around August." He promised to limit traffic, noise and daily disruption for neighbors. "Those disruptions are temporary," he said. "The benefits are not." The Mississippi Free Press noted that watchdog groups warn such centers consume large amounts of power and water, and that residents near new data centers elsewhere have faced rising energy costs.

The county's part is under way. On July 6, 2026 the Warren County Board of Supervisors approved a $20 million Mississippi Development Authority loan for infrastructure tied to the project, a right of way for a new Entergy 500kV line from the power station, and engineering for road work on Highway 61 South to connect the entrance road. It also approved an agreement under which AWS would cover the county's loan payments if they come due before revenue from the project arrives; Pablo Diaz of the Vicksburg-Warren Economic Development Partnership said this was not a sign of any delay: "The project is going on schedule as planned."

Elsewhere in Mississippi, Compass Datacenters is building a facility in Meridian and Avaio has announced a $6 billion campus in Rankin County. The Warren County Board of Supervisors, led by President Kelle Barfield, and the Vicksburg city government are AWS's local partners, and the supervisors vote on the county's agreements for the project. No completion date has been announced.
