Data centers in South Africa: 9 projects mapped
South Africa's data centers are concentrated around Johannesburg, where Teraco's Isando campus has 70 megawatts of power for computers and its Bredell campus 63, and Cape Town is next. On July 14, 2026, Cape Town's Municipal Planning Tribunal approved Equinix's plan for two data centers on the old King David golf course next to Cape Town International Airport, with a peak demand of up to 160 megawatts. The objectors' lawyers at the Legal Resources Centre said they were considering an appeal.
The Housing Assembly and the London group Foxglove objected that the rezoning rested on a 24-page letter "that says nothing about water, nothing about emissions," in a city that nearly ran out of water in 2018. Equinix says the buildings will use dry, air-based cooling. Four large projects planned in Cape Town, including a 360-megawatt campus announced by the Cavaleros Group, would together need 580 megawatts, just over a third of the city's current peak demand.

In September 2026 civil rights groups called for a halt to new data centers until their use of water, land and electricity has been investigated. The South African Human Rights Commission has received more than 250 submissions in its own inquiry. Eskom, the state power company, came through the winter with a surplus, and campaigners fear that power will be sold to data centers.
In Durban, eThekwini's council agreed in February 2026 to explore an AI data center in the south of the city with a Korean consortium; the city says only the exploratory agreement was approved, not a project. Teraco's existing Durban data center, DB1, has 2.2 megawatts.
