Data centers in Gauteng: 6 projects mapped

Gauteng, around Johannesburg, holds many of South Africa's largest data centers; South Africa has about 70 percent of Africa's. Teraco's Isando campus has 70 megawatts of computing power and its Bredell campus in Ekurhuleni has 63 megawatts, Teraco says. NTT Data's Midrand facility has 12 megawatts. Vantage is building three data centers in Waterfall City planned at 120 megawatts, and Africa Data Centres runs facilities in Midrand and Samrand.

In September 2026 civil rights groups called for a halt to new data centers until their use of water, land and electricity had been investigated. The South African Human Rights Commission, which sought public input in May, said it had received more than 250 submissions. "A key issue emerging from the process is precisely the availability, consistency and transparency of information relating to matters such as electricity and water demand, land use, infrastructure requirements, environmental impacts and impacts on surrounding communities," said Dr. Eileen Carter, who leads the commission's review. Street protests have centred on Cape Town, where the Housing Assembly is fighting two data centers proposed by Equinix.

Eskom says it can meet current demand from data centers, though the country had near-daily power cuts in 2023. On water, Teraco's head of sustainability Bryce Allan said a 30-megawatt data center using closed-loop cooling "would consume the same amount of water as the average restaurant" in a year. "When we look at our domestic power requirements, it necessitates a conversation about prioritising," said Daniel Hartford of Foxglove.
