Amazon Web Services runs data centers in Eskilstuna and Katrineholm, two of the three sites behind its Stockholm cloud region, and is expanding both. In Eskilstuna's logistics park, AWS has applied for a building permit to add 88,000 square meters in three buildings on its 33-hectare property, next to the roughly 20,000-square-meter center that opened in 2018. The third site in the region is in Västerås, in neighboring Västmanland.
Asked about power, Kjell Andersson, chief executive of the city utility Eskilstuna Energi och Miljö, told E-kuriren that AWS does not use all the capacity it booked when it first arrived, leaving room for the expansion. In Katrineholm, AWS says the steel for its new building came entirely from scrap melted in electric furnaces run on carbon-free power.
Two other projects are under way in the county. In Eskilstuna, Scandinavian Data Centers is turning the Ärnaberget rock caverns near Torshälla, where aircraft engines were once built, into a 2 billion kronor data center, ScandiDC I, due for tenants in the fourth quarter of 2026, with waste heat for the city's district heating. In Strängnäs, Brookfield plans an AI data center that Byggindustrin says would be the largest foreign direct investment in Sweden ever at full size; construction was planned for 2026 if the power supply can be solved first.
