Amazon's cloud region in Bahrain was knocked out by war. On March 1, 2026, after joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, a drone strike close to an Amazon Web Services facility in Bahrain caused structural damage, disrupted power and required fire suppression that caused water damage, while two AWS data centers in the United Arab Emirates were hit directly, CNBC reported. Iran's Fars News Agency said the Bahrain facility had been targeted "to identify the role of these centers in supporting the enemy's military and intelligence activities"; Amazon declined to comment on the claim, which CNBC could not verify. A second availability zone was disrupted in April, taking the region fully offline, Help Net Security reported.
On Sept. 15 AWS said it could not recover customer data and resources hosted only in its Bahrain region, me-south-1, which it had announced in 2019 and which hosts significant government workloads. "After a thorough assessment, we have determined that we are unable to restore access to the resources and data hosted exclusively in this region," the company wrote, adding that the damage across multiple availability zones had exceeded what its redundancy was designed to withstand. It said most customers had already moved, and that it would give a further update for Bahrain in early 2027. Fortune reported that the attacks were believed to be the first time data centers had been deliberately targeted for air strikes in a conflict.

Bahrain's local operators are smaller. The telecoms group Beyon commissioned a 6,000-square-metre White Space Data Centre at its Data Oasis campus in southern Bahrain in 2025, which Batelco's chief executive, Maitham Abdulla, called "the largest and most power-dense facility in Bahrain"; it also runs a 2.75-megawatt site at Hamala, supplied in part by its own solar park, DCD reported. Batelco has since leased the new facility to Qareeb Data Centers to operate as an edge data center, w.media reported. Beyon has also agreed with the government's Information & eGovernment Authority to launch an Oracle-based sovereign cloud intended to keep data entirely within Bahrain.
Whether AWS will rebuild in Bahrain, and whether other hyperscale projects will proceed there after the strikes, has not been announced.
