Amazon Web Services runs its AWS Mexico (Central) cloud region across three separate data center sites in the state of Queretaro, Mexico, not a single campus; AWS launched the region on January 14, 2025, saying it would invest more than $5 billion in Mexico over 15 years. AWS first announced the region in February 2024 after five years of work, and says it will add about $10 billion to Mexico's GDP and support more than 7,000 full-time equivalent jobs a year at outside businesses.

AWS describes each of the three sites as having its own power, cooling and security, spaced far enough apart to keep working if one fails but close enough to keep response times fast. The company launched a $300,000 community fund in Queretaro, and Governor Mauricio Kuri said the investment puts the state "at the digital forefront of Latin America."

AWS told the Thomson Reuters Foundation's Context in 2024 that its buildings use an air-cooled design that does not need ongoing cooling water, but the nearby municipality of Colon, which has drawn $10 billion in data center investment from Microsoft, Google and Amazon, was then in its second year of drought. In February 2026 Mexico Business News reported resident complaints about water rationing and power cuts near the state's data centers; Queretaro's sustainable development minister, Marco del Prete, said the water problems predate the data centers.

Microsoft opened its own competing Mexico Central region in Queretaro in 2024, and in March 2026 AWS technology director Manuel Puron told El CEO that the company plans to keep growing its footprint there, with more than 110 AWS services then available from the region, including generative AI models through Bedrock.
