Querétaro is where most of Mexico's data centers are. In May 2026 the Mexican Data Center Association said the state held 72% of the country's 279 megawatts of installed data center capacity, with about 10 facilities running and 12 more in development, mostly in the municipalities of Colón and El Marqués. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google have built here, and the largest new plan is CloudHQ's: $4.8 billion for six buildings with up to 900 megawatts of computing load and its own 400-kilovolt power line.
The complaints come from the villages around the campuses. In Viborillas, which is surrounded by data centers, resident Brenda Almaraz said some homes get water only three days a week and some have gone a month without it. In Ajuchitlán, taxi driver Félix Farfán said his monthly power bill rose from MX$800 to MX$1,200 despite frequent outages since a nearby data center opened in 2024. State sustainable development minister Marco del Prete said "blaming data centers for water shortages oversimplifies the problem, as water issues predate their arrival."

A report by Oxfam México and Oxfam Intermón found that Microsoft is authorized to pump up to 25 million liters of groundwater a year for one campus. It also criticized the tax breaks data centers receive and the lack of environmental impact reviews; the state exempts facilities inside industrial parks from standard impact statements. Of 21 community projects that UN-Habitat and Microsoft promised in Colón and El Marqués in 2022, Context found 19 still unfinished in late 2025.
Power is the other strain. Former energy regulator Guillermo García Alcocer said some finished data centers had waited up to two years to connect to the grid; Governor Mauricio Kuri said in September 2026 that the state's problem is transmission and distribution, not supply. The federal utility CFE is energizing two substations that add 26.8 megawatts, and CloudHQ says it is spending $250 million on its own power lines for its first 200 megawatts.
