Data centers in Colombia: 4 projects mapped

Colombia has about 25 data centers operating and at least nine more announced or in development, most of them around Bogotá, many in the free trade zones on the city's edge that give investors tax breaks. The biggest build is by ODATA, now part of Aligned Data Centers: two data centers announced in October 2024 for $1.3 billion, BG02 with 24 megawatts in the Occidente free zone in Mosquera and BG03 with 120 megawatts in the Metropolitana free zone in Tenjo, north of Bogotá. ODATA said the first phases would be finished by the end of 2026.

BG03 would be Colombia's largest data center and the first connected directly to the national transmission grid, the company says. The two join ODATA's 14.6-megawatt BG01 in the Cota free zone. Ascenty, Equinix and Scala also run or plan sites around the capital. The data center industry group ACOLDC is preparing proposals on power supply for the next national government.

Power is the worry. The grid operator XM reported on April 10, 2026 that Colombia lacks enough backup capacity to meet demand in a long drought or an El Niño year. Natalia Gutiérrez, president of the generators' association Acolgen, said the risk to supply is real and there is no time left to wait. The Bogotá distributor Enel has warned of medium-term risks of being unable to serve demand in the savanna north and west of the capital, where Tenjo and Mosquera lie, because national transmission projects are late.
