Data centers in Switzerland: 6 projects mapped
Switzerland's data center fight is in Beringen, a village of about 5,000 people in canton Schaffhausen. Stack Infrastructure is building a data center on the Beringerfeld that will use 315 gigawatt-hours of electricity a year, and a few hundred meters away Enka Investment AG, the Swiss arm of the Turkish builder Enka, has filed plans for a second that would average 20 megawatts of power and peak at 40. Both are due on the grid in 2028; Enka's building application is still under review by the municipality.
Stack's plant alone will use up to three-quarters of what the whole canton used in 2022, and the cantonal utility is building a new substation for it, paid for by the operator. The village approved 55,000 cubic meters of water a year for its cooling, and Enka's would take another 30,000; the village president, Roger Paillard, expects the two together to add 10 to 15% to Beringen's water use.

In the summer, activists from the group Aufstände der Allmende camped near the site. Three cantonal lawmakers, Maurus Pfalzgraf, Nina Schärrer and Markus Leu, have put a motion to the cantonal parliament's building committee that would make new data centers reuse their waste heat, and want it in force before Enka's plant is approved.
Around Zurich, where most Swiss data centers are, Green is completing a three-building, 35-megawatt campus in Dielsdorf, which will use seven times as much electricity as the rest of the municipality. In Winterthur, Vantage is building four data centers with 40 megawatts, which will raise the city's electricity use by about half. Zurich's canton already requires operators to make their waste heat available.
