Bavaria's main data center fight is in Wenzenbach, northeast of Regensburg. On June 5, 2026, a landowner and the Spanish energy developer IGNIS presented the town with a plan for a data center of up to 300 megawatts of power and a 100-megawatt battery plant at the Abbachhof, a medieval farm estate, an investment that could top €2 billion. The site sits beside about 21 hectares where the grid operator TenneT plans a large substation, expected by 2032.
Opposition formed within weeks. The farm's tenants were appalled, a citizens' initiative was founded, a petition against the project neared its 3,000-signature goal and the Bund Naturschutz came out against it, Regensburg Digital reported. The Abbachhof has a chapel nearly a thousand years old, and heritage officials called a demolition permit "hopeless"; the town's drinking water well is 900 meters away. On June 23 the town council passed a resolution of "constructive acknowledgement," but the town says "the council has neither approved a data center nor created building rights."

What happens next depends on the grid. TenneT is choosing which projects get power at the new substation through a review of each project's finances, land and readiness; applications ran from April to June 2026. Only if IGNIS wins a connection would the council have to decide whether to start a development plan, which it can stop at any time.
Around Munich, the established data centers belong to operators such as Equinix, which runs MU1, MU3 and MU4, the last in Aschheim east of the city; its contractor topped out a further phase, MU4.3, in July 2026.
