Data centers in Harris County, Texas: 5 projects mapped

Harris County already has five data centers operating in Houston: Serverfarm's CTX1/CTX2 campus, CyrusOne's HOU3-HOU4, Digital Realty's Meadows Place site, Equinix's HO1 hub and Switch's Greenspoint campus. The newest activity is in the county's north, where TRG Datacenters broke ground on HOU2, a 24-megawatt building on its Spring campus due online in the fourth quarter of 2026, and in Jacinto City, about eight miles east of downtown, where a broker is marketing a former industrial site for a data center of up to 79 megawatts with no buyer yet named.

The Jacinto City site sits near low-income housing, a little over a mile from Whittier Elementary, and its marketing brochure lists Texas's data center sales tax exemption, federal incentives and Harris County's freeport tax exemption as selling points, Chron reported. Rice University's Tommy Pan Fang, who studies the industry, asked, "Is it right for local governments to try to bring in these data centers with the promises that these data centers have in mind, or are there going to be these negative externalities once a data center is built that is hard to reverse?"

The bigger constraint is the power grid. CenterPoint Energy expects to energize 8 gigawatts of data center load in the Houston area by 2029, with 3.5 gigawatts already under construction, and has asked grid operator ERCOT to study more than 17 gigawatts of further requests. That review is on hold after Gov. Greg Abbott ordered an audit of every data center project seeking state permits, the Houston Chronicle reported.
