Washington County's data center is in Brenham. Viridien, the French earth-science and computing company formerly known as CGG, bought roughly 20 acres at 2602 Longwood Drive from the city's development corporation in a sale that closed in July 2025, after talks that began in April 2022. It plans a $100 million hub for its own high-performance computing, starting with one 40,000-square-foot building and expanding to three, about 45 megawatts at full buildout, KBTX and DCD reported.
The site was moved from FM 332 and FM 389 to address noise concerns, Mayor Atwood Kenjura told KWHI. He said the city had first told the company it would not work because of the water such facilities need; the city says the design uses "significantly less water than many traditional data centers." Power comes from Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, and Kenjura said the company would provide $20 million to upgrade Bluebonnet's capacity.

Most residents learned of it in January 2026, when the council scheduled a vote to create a reinvestment zone for a tax phase-in. The city said the project "was not rushed, not hidden, and not done behind closed doors" and that it was not a cloud storage site or a crypto mine. "Economic development projects don't always attract attention until people hear a label that sparks concern," said economic development director Teresa Rosales.
On January 8, with more than 100 residents in the room, the council voted down the reinvestment zone, and the room erupted in cheers, KBTX reported. "The lack of transparency just seems like something is wrong," said Taylor Farmer, an environmental consultant who grew up in Brenham. A Change.org petition against the project had more than 1,000 signatures, DCD reported. The vote denies the tax incentive but does not stop the project: the land sale had already closed, and the city said the vote was not about whether the facility comes to Brenham.
