Switch data centers: 13 sites mapped

Switch, a colocation company founded in 2000 and owned by DigitalBridge and IFM Investors since a $11 billion buyout in December 2022, runs its largest campuses in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada, plus Grand Rapids, Michigan, Austin, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia. On June 17, 2026 the Clark County Commission approved LAS 19, a 56,800 square foot building near Warm Springs Road in Las Vegas, over objections from residents and the Sierra Club.

The local advisory board had recommended denying some of the design waivers Switch sought. "Data centers are destroying communities, driving climate change, consuming resources and enriching tech billionaires," said Marija Minic of the Sierra Club's Toiyabe chapter. Switch dropped a request to skip the county's tree-planting rule and agreed to help pay for a barrier along the road. Commissioner Tick Segerblom voted yes but said the county needs a data center ordinance: "This valley is so small."

Nevada's utility, NV Energy, puts the power demand of 12 proposed data center projects statewide at 5,900 megawatts, about 2.8 times the capacity of Hoover Dam. Reno's city council has voted to extend a data center moratorium through August 31, 2027, and Henderson's council is weighing a pause of up to 180 days on permits. Switch is expanding east too, announcing a 382-acre campus in Big Beaver Borough, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, about 40 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, that it says will use closed-loop cooling that consumes no water.
