Data centers in Jeollanam-do: 2 projects mapped
South Korea's national AI computing center is under construction at the Solaseado Data Center Park in Haenam County; the science ministry broke ground on August 3, 2026. It is being built and run by Korea AI Computing Center Co. (CoreAIC), set up in June 2026 by the government, the National Growth Fund and a Samsung SDS-led group that includes Naver Cloud, Kakao and KT. Plans call for 2.5 trillion won of investment, 15,000 advanced chips by 2028 and 50,000 by 2030, with full operation in 2028.
CoreAIC says it has applied to KEPCO, the state utility, for power and is laying a water pipeline. Haenam's pitch is renewable power: a 98-megawatt solar complex already runs at Solaseado, with 5.4 gigawatts planned by 2030, and the county is setting up a residents' fund so locals share in energy income. In July 2026 the county council passed an ordinance backing AI, chip and data industries, which the county tied to the computing center and about 17 trillion won of AI data center investment.
The second project is SK's part of OpenAI's Stargate plan for Korea. In October 2025 the government said OpenAI's joint ventures with Samsung SDS and SK Telecom would build two data centers with an initial 20 megawatts. On February 11, 2026 the science minister said construction would start in March, but SK Telecom told Reuters it was still in talks on a site in southwestern Korea, with timing under review. The Seoul Economic Daily has named Solaseado as a leading candidate; no site has been announced.
