Data centers in Mobile County, Alabama: 2 projects mapped
Mobile County has two data center proposals at opposite ends of the county, and in both, local officials say they have little power to stop them. Beacon Data Centers wants to build a 95-acre complex called the Calvert Infrastructure Hub between Calvert and Mt. Vernon. In Prichard, Edged has proposed a smaller networking data center called Project Gateway, and the city has since paused new data center permits for 180 days.
At the Beacon site, Commission President Connie Hudson said "the county does not have the legal authority to prevent such a development from coming to Mobile because we don't have home rule," and that the county issues no construction permits there because the land is already zoned industrial. South Alabama Utilities' Donnie Cunningham said the project would use about 7,500 gallons of water a day for staff facilities, "about as much as a 50-lot subdivision"; Beacon says it plans closed-loop cooling for the servers. Alabama Power's Erin Delaport said Beacon would pay for grid upgrades but has not yet completed the engineering study that would set its power use.

Residents split at commission meetings. Mt. Vernon's Gina Daniels said the county should get Beacon to fund an ambulance service and full-time fire department: "There is a lot more we can do up-front with Beacon." Cathy Odom said, "We the people have been left out of the equation of all the data centers. It just seems like it's a done deal." The Mobile Chamber's David Rogers said Beacon has promised no tax incentives and projected $49 million a year in county tax revenue and 250 permanent jobs.
In Prichard, Edged proposed a $93 million, 8-megawatt facility on Telegraph Road near Africatown, on a former city 911 site that has been empty since 2011. A petition against it passed 4,200 signatures. Edged's David Garland said the plant would use waterless cooling because "water is for drinking, not for data," and called it a networking data center rather than an AI one. In early August 2026 the Prichard City Council voted a 180-day moratorium on new data center permits so it can write rules on noise, light and vibration; the council can extend the pause, and neither project has been approved.
