Morgan County passed a moratorium to stop a bitcoin mine near Somerville, and the mine went ahead anyway. In June 2026, representatives of a company presenting itself as VoltCore told homeowners on Union Road, near State Roads 36 and 67, that they planned a 50-megawatt bitcoin mining data center on 15 acres. The company needed easements from four homeowners for new power lines and offered cash, a year of free internet, a natural gas line and land restoration; none accepted. "There are more rules if I wanted to put a chicken house on my property, than there are if I wanted to install a data center," said resident Brock Wilson.

On June 23 the county commission approved a one-year moratorium on cryptomining data centers after more than 450 people signed petitions. By August, flags marking water, gas and AT&T lines had appeared in yards along Union Road. Commission Chairman Ray Long said the moratorium carries no enforcement power: "We can't keep them from doing anything right now because there's no laws at all in Morgan County in rural areas." When homeowners refused easements, he said, the company routed its lines through the county right of way instead, which the county could not refuse either.

Residents then traced who is behind it. Probate records show a Texas company, Sovereign Global Solutions, bought the land in August 2025 and moved it in May 2026 to a new Alabama company, Sovereign Gazelle LLC; state records name Kevin Mohan of Texas as responsible for both, and list as an agent the man who had visited homeowners for VoltCore. VoltCore's listed phone and email contacts were invalid, and Mohan could not be reached. He also created an Alabama company called Project Avalanche LLC on August 4, which residents fear signals more sites to come.

Residents are raising money through GiveSendGo for a lawyer and an environmental study, citing flood risk in the low-lying pasture and nearby endangered species, and have started a website called Protect Alabama Communities to track the project.
