Google is exploring a data center on about 900 acres of farmland that the town of Salix, south of Sioux City, annexed in April 2026. MidAmerican Energy, which took options on the land, named Google as the prospective customer on August 3, and no rezoning or development application had been filed. The county's own one-year moratorium covers unincorporated areas, and its zoning commission holds a town hall on data center rules in Salix on November 9.

Salix, a town of about 300 people, is split. On August 20 the City Council voted 3-2 against a one-year pause, after an earlier meeting was cancelled over what Mayor Kevin Nelson called "death and terroristic type things" posted online. "It's too big of a decision for us five people," said council member Gene Monk, who backed the pause. Council member Denise Burkhart voted no: "We need to open conversations with Google to see what they want to bring here." A petition against the project passed 540 signatures.

The annexation is in court. Landowners say four of the five annexed parcels did not touch the city limits and that neighbors were not properly notified, and Woodbury County is also challenging it. Google's Trent Fellers wrote to residents that the company had "finalized an agreement with MidAmerican Energy Company that enables us to explore a potential data center development in Salix."

The Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 for the county moratorium on June 23, 2026, and is writing an ordinance through town halls. At one in Moville, Winnebago Tribal Council member Keely Bassette Purcell warned, "Harm our fish, harm our water," while resident Tom Morgan asked, "How much business are we running away from Woodbury County?"
