Data centers in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana: 1 project mapped
A data center cannot legally be built in unincorporated Calcasieu Parish right now, because the parish has no ordinance allowing one, the first obstacle facing a St. Louis developer eyeing wooded land near Moss Bluff. Azimuth Renewables confirmed in September 2026 that it holds an April option on about 1,100 acres north of Coffey Road, between Paul White and North Perkins Ferry roads, roughly eight miles north of Lake Charles. "We are in the evaluation stage for this site and are still determining whether or not a project could work at this location," said company president David Bunge.
The company says any buildings would sit on a fraction of the land, that its wooded, largely flood-zone edges would buffer noise and views, and that the project would pay for its own infrastructure upgrades. Parish spokesman Joseph Booth said there is no land-use ordinance allowing data centers in unincorporated areas and "no proposed timeline" for one, which makes a data center effectively barred there for now.

Moss Bluff residents were already fighting a neighboring proposal: a 4,700-acre solar farm with up to 2.5 million panels on the site next door, from California-based Orion Renewable Energy Group. State Rep. Brett Geymann said the data center news "has elevated the opposition" to the solar farm, warning that approving it "would almost certainly open a gateway for the data center." He and three other state legislators asked the planning and zoning board to deny the farm's zoning variance, and Geymann said Moss Bluff has no heavy commercial or industrial zoning at all.
Police Juror Darby Quinn, whose property borders the 1,100 acres, said he opposes "any industrial-sized development in Ward 1," and Beauregard Electric general manager Mike Viator, speaking as a resident, said he worried about property values. The solar farm's zoning variance could come up for a vote as early as November 2026; a date has not been set, and Azimuth has not said whether it will move ahead with the data center site.
