Missoula County's pause on data centers began with a small proposal. Idaho-based Krambu had applied to put a data center in the former UFP Edge building at the Bonner Mill Industrial Park, near the Blackfoot River, starting at about 7 megawatts but able to grow to 100. At a June community meeting, a presenter described it as a 29-megawatt facility. On July 6, 2026, the park's general manager, Mike Heisey, withdrew his signature from the application, ending it: "After hearing from the public and understanding what the concerns are, I have decided to withdraw my signature."

More than 100 residents had turned out at a community meeting in Bonner, worried about water, noise, heat and pollution of the Blackfoot, and warning a small facility could open the door to larger ones. Three days after Krambu withdrew, on July 9, commissioners unanimously adopted a one-year moratorium on new data centers outside Missoula city limits, after 30 public commenters all spoke in favor. Planning director Karen Hughes said the county's 2021 zoning rules do not cover water, air quality, heat or the "24/7 low-frequency noise" of modern data centers.

County attorney John Hart said the county cannot ban data centers permanently, and the pause can be extended once more. A study to justify the moratorium is due within 30 days, and new regulations are expected before it expires on July 8, 2027. Commissioner Josh Slotnick said the 2021 rules were written when "a data center meant something very different than what it means right now."
