Aiken County has recruited data centers instead of fighting them. The largest is Meta's $800 million campus in the Sage Mill Industrial Park in Graniteville, expected to open in spring 2027. Aiken Electric will supply the power, backed by a solar field in Orangeburg County that will offset "some of the use that Meta will have, not all of it," said Will Williams of the Western SC Economic Development Partnership.

The County Council has since approved incentives for two smaller multi-tenant projects for customers it would not name: a DC BLOX data center near North Augusta, approved 8-1 in January 2025 over the objection of council member Mike Kellems, and a $32 million, 60,000-square-foot building beside Sage Mill for Clop Aiken SC LLC, an Oppidan Investment Co. subsidiary, approved that June. "We've offered multiple [fee in lieu of property taxes agreements] to solar farms that never happened," council chairman Gary Bunker said, cautioning that incentives do not guarantee a project.

The federal government is planning the biggest project yet. In July 2026 the National Nuclear Security Administration picked the engineering firm Amentum to negotiate a lease for a 1-gigawatt AI data center at the Savannah River Site, backed by its own gas power and, later, nuclear power. The Department of Energy says the pick "does not constitute a final lease award" and still needs permitting and security review.

The first pushback has come from horse country. At a packed County Council meeting, residents raised rumors of a data center and gas plant off New Holland Road that officials said they had not discussed. "District 1 has a large community of horse people," said council member Ron Felder, who said residents had been offered "significant amounts of money for their property."
