Glasscock County is already home to a large Bitcoin mine at Garden City, and a new Austin company plans an AI data center powered by natural gas made on site. Applied Digital powered up its 200-megawatt Garden City site on November 28, 2023, running it on wind power under a deal with Brookfield's TerraForm Power, Data Center Dynamics reported. Marathon Digital bought the site outright in April 2024; chief executive Fred Thiel said the deal gave the company "an additional 100 megawatts of capacity in which to expand."
The newer project has no firm date. In April 2026 DCD reported that Pace, an Austin firm founded by Preston Stein and Chance Pressley, plans a 100-megawatt "Lone Star Project" in the county that it believes could eventually grow to 1 gigawatt, powered by natural gas generated on site rather than drawn from the grid. Stein said the project is built "around speed to power"; Pressley said the goal is "a durable platform in Glasscock County" built "wherever possible" with Texas people and businesses.
Pace has not said where its water will come from, how much it will use, or exactly where in the county the site sits, and no Commissioners Court vote, tax abatement application, or comment from a county official or resident has surfaced for either project.
